publishing basics

MARCH 2025

THE ROAD AHEAD

For those who may not be aware Dark Horse Books, my publisher, has been dealing with some various internal and financial matters that recently saw them layoff some of their staff as well as discontinue and even cancel some of their titles and projects. Some of those canceled  titles were what we had set up for release in 2025 and 2026. While I was hoping they’d be able to survive to see publication that sadly is not the case. These developments have also left me seeking alternative options and ideas for the rest of the titles (current, forthcoming, and in production) to see how best to navigate the waters should things continue to be a bit more volatile for the foreseeable future.

I look forward to be able to share more news on these developments soon. Chiefly this means reevaluating titles and production submission considerations as well as reaching out to other publishers to see who’d be open to taking on what and when. This will remain more of an ongoing project for a while until I’m able to lock down a few tent spikes again.

In the mean time, what does this mean for you, the reader?

Well, The Wizard King Trilogy will remain in print for at least this year (as far as I understand it).  The box set will be taken out of print shortly, however.  There are still some copies of it in the wild but not too many, generally speaking. If you happen to find one and want to pick it up now would be the time as they will not be reprinted. As the Sparrow Flies will also remain in print for the time being but it too has low inventory and depending on how things go with securing a new publisher for the series it probably won’t be seeing any reprints. The next two books in the series, of course, will not be coming out as this time.

Rainier’s Legacy, The Shadow Regent, and Sons of Ashgard: Ill Met in Elmgard, will also remain in print. These have a bit more of an inventory at the moment, helping sustain them throughout this year, I should think, less we see a sudden rush on sales. After this year I’m not so sure—again, this depending on the ultimate direction decided upon and how things turn out with other publishers and even future Dark Horse developments.

So bottom line is while this is less than ideal I’m optimistic on the ultimate outcome. Dark Horse has also been very good to work with on everything, which will help greatly when we eventually make those moves to other publishers. As I know more and am able I’ll share more to this site and possibly social media, as warranted.
